As Whitley County celebrates 60 years of football, the Colonels are headed into the 2026 football season with one goal. “ go from where we are to a little bit better and just keep stacking those days until, you know, we are, you know, really strong football program,” said Whitley County Head Coach Matt Rhymer. For the Corbin Redhound football program, a state championship run is not just a goal, it is an expectation. This season, the Redhound Faithful are celebrating 50 years since the 1976 state championship. “It's a great thing to honor and recognize,” said Corbin Redhound Head Coach Luke Salmons. “You know, they laid the groundwork for what we are today.” So, who are the Redhounds today? This year’s squad returns last season’s quarterback, Mason Salmons, who passed for more than 2,400 yards and 30 touchdown pass completions. Whitley County traveled to Lynn Camp on Aug. 6 for a scrimmage.  The Lynn Camp Wildcats won 20-6.

The Corbin Redhound Football coaches and players worked with students in grades kindergarten to eighth grade during the 2026 Redhound Football Youth Camp on July 24. The athletes worked on fundamentals, including tackling, route running, catching, throwing and turnovers. They also received a free meal and t-shirts.

Malachi Brown is not the only UK commit on this year’s squad. Larron Westmoreland is an incoming senior. He transferred to Corbin from Jeffersontown. During his junior season, he logged 78 net yards passing, 287 net yards rushing, 459 yards gained receiving, 112 points, 67 tackles and three interceptions. Westmoreland received offers from nearly one dozen schools including University of Louisville, Eastern Kentucky University, University of South Carolina, University of West Virginia, University of Ohio and more. In addition to football, Westmoreland also played basketball at Jeffersontown.

The Corbin Redhounds’ 2025 season concluded last Friday night in the most heartbreaking manner imaginable. After battling tooth-and-nail on a freezing cold night in enemy territory, Coach Luke Salmons’ squad found themselves in a position to punch in a late score and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Or so they thought, as did everyone else who was in attendance or watching at home. Unfortunately for Salmons and company, a controversial decision by the officiating crew negated what clearly looked to be a fumble recovery by the Redhounds. When the Corbin Redhounds and the Boyle County Rebels meet this Friday in the semifinal round of this year’s Class 4A state championship playoffs, it will be the latest chapter in a series that has produced some of the best high school football contests of the past decade. In 2017, the Redhounds, coached by Justin Haddix, met up with the Rebels in the Class 3A state championship finals. The Rebs were dominant in that game, winning 40-21. The Corbin Redhounds (10-3) went on the road last Friday night and played the atypical role of the underdog against the Highlands Bluebirds in round three of the 2025 Class 4A state championship playoffs. The Hounds rose to the occasion in grand fashion, though, executing in all facets of the game to secure a 35-21 regional championship victory. After trading punts to start out the game, an interception by Corbin’s Trey Person led to a 55-yard touchdown run by Redhound quarterback Mason Salmons with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. With a 47-14 victory over visiting Lincoln County last Friday, the Corbin Redhounds (9-3) now stand alone as the only coverage area team left standing in the 2025 Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) postseason. Senior running back Cole Stevens put on a show in the game against the Patriots, finding pay dirt four times – twice rushing and twice receiving. Senior Cam Estep also had a great night for the Hounds, catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Mason Salmons and returning an interception for a score on defense. After a dominating performance in the finals of this year’s Kentucky Middle School Football Association (KYMSFA) Division 2 state tournament, the Corbin eighth grade Redhounds have added the tenth state championship trophy to the school’s trophy case. The eighth grade Hounds defeated Rockcastle County, 26-8, in the state championship game this past Saturday, Nov. 15, at Lexington Christian Academy.
