Mattingly successfully defends 800-meter crown at state track and field meet

When Williamsburg sophomore Selena Mattingly entered into the spring 2017 season, she carried with her a lot of heavy expectations. After becoming a state champion in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs in 2016, all eyes were on her to once again accomplish big things on the track this year. The road has not been easy for Mattingly these past few months, but by the time region competition rolled around two weeks ago she looked ready to defend her crowns, qualifying for state with region championship victories in the 1600, 400, 800 and 3200-meter races. Corbin’s Carloftis and Reedy make Elite Eight, Whitley County’s Tan appears in Sweet 16 at state tennis championships

The 13th Region was well represented at the state level once again this year, with a total of twelve coverage area players advancing to compete in last week’s KHSAA championships in Lexington. Corbin had two teams in the boys doubles bracket – region champions Peyton Hamlin/Brady Keith, and the pairing of Seth and Zane Maguet. Hamlin and Keith were defeated in round one last Thursday morning by Michael Ioffe and Spencer Strelsov (5) of DuPont Manual 6-4, 6-2, while the Maguets were defeated in round one by Chandler Nguyen and Wes Patterson of Russell 6-0, 6-3. Corbin baseball and softball win district titles Tuesday

Tuesday was, indeed, a good day to be a Corbin Redhound. The Lady Hounds softball team came into this year's 50th District tournament ready to take care of business, and take care of business they did. First they defeated Williamsburg 9-0 on Monday night (see our May 24 print edition for full details), and then they topped South Laurel Tuesday 10-4 to become district champs in 2017. Patrick Robinson steps down as head coach of WHS boys basketball program

After 11 years of leading the Williamsburg High School boys basketball program, Patrick Robinson has decided to step down as head coach of the Yellow Jackets. A press release sent out by WHS Athletic Director John Harris Thursday said, “The Williamsburg Independent School District wishes to announce that it has started the search process for a new head boys’ basketball coach. Former Hound Isaac Wilson named new CHS girls basketball head coach

The new head coach of the Corbin Lady Hounds basketball program was announced Monday afternoon, and it’s a familiar face. Former Redhound basketball player Isaac Wilson has been chosen to fill the position that was made vacant last month when former head coach Jason McDaniel announced that he was resigning after four years of leading the program. Wilson attended Corbin High School from 2007-2010. He was a standout member of the boys basketball team, earning the opportunity to continue his playing career at Alice Lloyd College. The 2017 high school tennis season officially wraps up this weekend at the KHSAA state championships in Lexington, but before that happens we have five more coverage area tennis players to meet in this week’s Senior Spotlight. 13th Region tennis championships decided Tuesday

On Tuesday, the 2017 13th Region tennis tournaments concluded with four championship matches at Whitley County High School. In boys doubles, the team of Brady Keith and Peyton Hamlin from Corbin defeated their opponents from Middlesboro in a very competitive matchup – 7-5, 5-7, 10-3. After the match, Keith said, “This feels great. I was confident coming in, but I also knew that it was going to be a tough match.” Hamlin added, “I’m pretty relieved, honestly.
