In this week’s Senior Spotlight we meet the two senior players leading the Whitley County softball team in 2017 – Destiny Kinder and Allison Minton. Kinder, 19, plays catcher for the Lady Colonels, and has been a member of the school’s softball program her entire time at WCHS. When asked to talk about her journey in a red-and-black uniform, she said, “I love playing softball. Being out here playing in the dirt is what I like to do.” Kinder has also made a name for herself as a standout basketball player for Whitley County. The following are scores and updates from Tuesday night high school baseball and softball games… The Corbin Lady Hounds suffered their first district loss of the season Tuesday, falling to visiting Williamsburg 7-5. With the loss, Corbin now stands at 12-4, 4-1. They will go on the road to face Clay County Thursday. Williamsburg (7-5, 2-3) will be back in action at Lynn Camp High School Wednesday. Speaking of Lynn Camp, they defeated Bell County at home Tuesday 19-9 to improve to 10-7 on the year. Jason McDaniel resigns as head coach of Lady Hounds basketball program

Jason McDaniel, who has led the Corbin Lady Hounds basketball program for the past four years as head coach, has announced that he is resigning. McDaniel decided to step down earlier this week, but he said that it was not an easy decision for him to make. "I still love basketball, and I still love coaching," he said. "I've fought with this for the last few weeks, but my life has changed quite a bit, and I just felt like it was time." With a 16-2 win at home against the visiting Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, the Whitley County Colonels got their revenge for a heartbreaking loss at Briar Creek Park Monday. Whitley (7-10, 1-3) will look to keep things rolling later this week when they welcome Harlan Independent to WCHS. Williamsburg (7-7, 1-3) will hope to bounce back Thursday when they go on the road to face Berea. Senior Spotlight: 2017 Williamsburg Softball

With wins over Whitley County, Scott, TN and McCreary Central this past week, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets were able to push their season record out to 6-3 ahead of a scheduled home game against South Laurel Tuesday. After defeating Corbin in the first round of last year’s 50th District tournament and advancing to the semifinals of the 2016 13th Region tournament, the Lady Jackets have high expectations for the remainder of this spring. They hope to once again contend for a district title, and maybe even have a shot at a region crown as well. Soccer standouts Neel Patel and Trey Cima discuss recent trip to Holland

As reported in the News Journal two weeks ago, local high school soccer players Neel Patel (Whitley County) and Trey Cima (Corbin) recently traveled to Holland as members of the Kentucky Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program. In this follow-up report, Patel and Cima talk about their experiences overseas, as well as how they plan on using the knowledge they gained in Holland to help them on the pitch back home. “Everything is so different,” Patel said of the attitude towards the sport in Europe. “The atmosphere, and how people react to soccer… they just really love the sport there. HS Baseball/Softball Update for Tues, April 11

The following are scores and updates from Tuesday night high school baseball and softball games... The game between the Corbin Redhounds (9-3) and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (4-5) was postponed after five innings due to weather. The Hounds were up 6-0 when play was suspended, and the game is scheduled to resume Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Corbin High School. Meanwhile, the Whitley County Colonels (5-8) were able to complete their game against South Laurel (6-5) in London, falling by the final score of 5-4. Senior Spotlight: 2017 Whitley County Baseball

This week didn’t start out the way the Whitley County Colonels hoped it would. They opened up district play at home Monday, falling to the South Laurel Cardinals 6-2. However, despite that setback the team is remaining optimistic about what they could accomplish together in 2017. The pieces are in place this spring for the Colonels to contend for a district title and reach the 13th Region tournament, including one of the most important components for any program – veteran leadership. This year the Whitley baseball team is being led by five talented and dedicated seniors – Jesse Bryant, Austin Caldwell, Tyler Downs, Brandon Harlan and Tanner Prewitt. After the loss...
