Coverage area high school basketball teams were back in action Tuesday night after recent snowy and icy conditions canceled several scheduled contests over the past week.
It was a night that featured four seeding games in the 50th District, as the South Laurel Cardinals and Lady Cardinals visited Corbin while the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets made the short trip across town to Whitley County High School.
The Lady Hounds were coming off of a 79-72 victory over Knox Central Monday night at Harlan County High School in the finals of this year’s Kentucky 2A Sectional tournament. It was a huge win that advanced Head Coach Isaac Wilson’s squad to...

Whether it’s serving with her racket on the tennis court or serving patients in a hospital setting, Corbin High School senior Lindsay Jones knows how to get the job done. A four-time regional champion, she is no stranger to performing in high-pressure situations. She has also grown accustomed to performing when the stakes are high in a professional setting, logging a total of 500 volunteer hours at Baptist Health Corbin.
“I have always known that I wanted to do something in healthcare,” said Jones, who has also remained active in the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) organization.
Jones explained that she began volunteering at BHC as a freshman, and...
Coming off a 17-14 season, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets saw noticeable improvement last year from the season before, but still fell short of some of the lofty goals Head Coach Anthony Hibbard had hoped to achieve.
Despite the shortcomings, the Jackets are once again setting their sights high as the 2024-2025 season tips off.
Hibbard said that he is “excited” about the upcoming season and expects to have a solid group of players on the court this year, especially with a core of experienced seniors to help lead the team.
“We have a solid core of returning players who have experience in our system and have been a part of some...
In regards to how the 50th District is shaping up this season for boys basketball, Whitley County High School Head Coach Eric Swords said that fans can expect “a dog fight as always.”
“South Laurel, I think, has everybody coming back. Corbin has a good group coming back. Williamsburg has an older group over there. In the 50th District, I think every night it will be like last year. We went three-and-three and beat everyone in the district. I think everybody is right there and it will come down to who executes and who wants it more,” Swords added.
The Colonels had a 20-10 record in 2023-24, ending last season with...
When considering the amount of veteran leadership that was lost to graduation from last year’s Corbin Lady Hounds basketball team, some may think that the program is entering a rebuilding phase in 2024-25. When you take a closer look, however, you will see that the team is actually bringing more than enough weapons back to the lineup to be considered among the region’s top squads once again.
True, Corbin said goodbye to a very special group of senior athletes at the end of last season that included Kallie Housley, Bailey Stewart and Darcie Anderson.
This class was responsible for putting the Lady Hounds back on top of the district and...
The Corbin Redhounds are one win away from another Kentucky High School Athletic Association state championship berth, but standing in their way is a Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado team that is trying to keep their impressive undefeated season alive.
The Hounds improved to 12-1 on the season last week when they defeated visiting Ashland Blazer, 42-7. It was the very definition of a dominating performance, with Corbin tallying up about 400 yards of total offense while limiting the Tomcats to only about 200 yards and a single score on the night.
Senior quarterback Kade Elam led the way for the Redhounds in their win over Ashland, rushing for four...
This week, the Mid-South Conference champion University of the Cumberlands men’s and women’s soccer teams will host first and second round action in the 2024 NAIA National Championship Tournaments. For the Patriot women, it is an opportunity to take the next step in successfully defending the national championship banner that they won nearly twelve months ago.
UC is coming into this year’s NAIA Tournament as the team to beat, boasting an undefeated 17-0 record with 12 of those wins being clean sheets (shutouts) for the Pats.
The five games that weren’t clean sheets saw opponents scoring only a single goal, bringing this season’s cumulative score to 64 goals for,...
