Corbin plans business owner mixer Thursday

Date:

The Corbin City Commission got updates concerning a planned mixer for local business owners this week, recent work by Corbin Tourism officials and the status of the Corbin Arena during their monthly meeting Monday.

Corbin Recreation Director and Downtown Manager Jacob Roan said that there will be a mix and mingle event at Tomahawks Thursday (Jan. 30) from 5-7 p.m. for downtown business owners. City commissioners have also been encouraged to attend.

“We have had a great response from business owners in town. Representatives from USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and some other organizations are going to be there to kind of gather some feedback from local business owners and see if there is anything they can do to help,” Roan said.

“There will be no formal presentation. We will have an opportunity for people to sign up to be on committees and things like that.”

Corbin Tourism Director Nancy Conley said that tourism recently completed the residence sentiment survey and results are finally in with a 91-page report. Nearly 300 people took the survey, which she noted is a good response for a city our size.

“It sounds like tourism is in a really good spot here thanks to all the work that all of our community, our city organizations and our board has done over the years. The residents seem to be very supportive of tourism here. They are interested in seeing us grow. They want to have input. They want to stay in the loop,” Conley said.

Conley noted that there are three local event venues now listed on the corbinmeets.com micro website, which can also be accessed from the corbinkytourism.com main website. It has information on the Corbin Arena, the Corbin Center and The Pennington.

“What this website does is showcase the great meeting and convention spaces in Corbin,” she said.

She said that Corbin is one of 11 communities that are members of the kentuckysportsalliance.com. Corbin has three venues listed on that website, including the Corbin Arena, Miller Park and Civic Center Park.

“We’re excited to see what kind of result that might bring us in the future,” Conley said.

Conley added that tourism is currently giving away some tickets to The Price is Right Live, which will be at the Corbin Arena with a show on Thursday, Feb. 13, starting at 7:30 p.m.

“If you jump over to the Corbin Tourism Facebook page, then you can enter the drawing and you might win a couple of tickets to The Price is Right Live,” she said.

City Manager Scott Williamson added that since longtime Corbin Arena Manager Kristina Balla left late last year, the staff at the Arena have really stepped up with events booked through summer.

“We have folks, who really stepped up at the Arena,” Williamson said.

Williamson said there are a number of events coming up, including the 13th Region High School Basketball Tournament, which will take place in March in addition to professional bull riding and monster trucks.

“People know there is an Arena in Corbin, Kentucky that has big shows at good prices,” he added.
