Jeremy Daniels is serving as the newest boys golf head coach at Whitley County High School. A member of the WCHS Class of 2010, he played golf himself as a Colonel for six years. He says that getting to return and take over a program that he was once a member of all those years ago is a “pretty cool” experience.
“I like the competitiveness of the sport,” said Daniels, who has also served as a longtime assistant for the school’s varsity baseball team and has volunteered as an assistant football coach at the middle school level in the past. “There is the one-on-one factor, but then it is also a team sport.”
Currently, the Colonels feature four juniors, two freshmen, and one senior player – EJ Allen. Daniels said he has seen improvement out of the team over the past several weeks, including picking up a win recently at a competition in Berea.
Last week, Daniels said the Colonels are focusing on practicing in preparation for this year’s regional championship meet, which will take place Monday at the London Country Club. He said he wants to see his players get out on the course and have some fun at the region meet, and hopes that they will be able to rise to the occasion and qualify for KHSAA State Championship competition.
Looking ahead, Daniels said that he feels the 2026 Colonels should benefit from getting an earlier start. He also said that he is excited about having so many players who will be able to return to the roster and continue building on the foundation that is currently being laid for the future of the program.
Look in the Sept. 24 print edition for coverage from the boys’ golf region meet. The girls’ regional championships will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, in Burnside.
