Due to a manhunt for a potentially dangerous gunman in the local area, week four of the 2024 high school football season ended up looking a lot different than it was originally scheduled to.
As a precautionary measure, some games were called off completely while others were moved to different locations. In the Whitley County Colonels’ case, they ended up playing a different opponent entirely.
Originally scheduled to make the short trip to London to play at South Laurel, the Colonels ended up going on the road to Campbellsville where they were shutout, 35-0, by the undefeated Eagles.
This week, Whitley will return to regularly scheduled action when they travel to take on the Bell County Bobcats. The Cats have won their last three games after dropping their season opener, 24-22, against visiting North Laurel.
The Colonels will once again be relying heavily on the talents of star running back Dee Parker in their upcoming game on Log Mountain.
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets were supposed to host the second of back-to-back home games last week, but ended up traveling to Louisville to face the Waggener Wildcats.
The Jackets won big on their impromptu road trip, 56-20, to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Senior quarterback Nate Goodin had another impressive showing for Williamsburg, throwing for 140 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for over 160 yards and a trio of scores.
This week, the Yellow Jackets will get a chance to rest up ahead of a road trip to Greenville, Tenn. next Friday, Sept. 27, to play at North Greene High School.
Another high profile game that was supposed to take place in the local area in week 4 was the undefeated Corbin Redhounds hosting the Pulaski County Maroons. Instead, the game was called off and the Hounds received an unexpected bye ahead of this week’s trip to Lexington to take on the Class 6A Broncos of Frederick Douglass High School.
Of course, fans will remember that Corbin was able to pull off a thrilling victory over the Broncos last season in the first game ever played on the newly installed turf at Campbell Field. This Friday, Frederick Douglass will be looking to return the favor and hand the Hounds their first loss of the season.
An interesting side note in this matchup… Corbin Head Coach Luke Salmons and Douglass Head Coach Nathan McPeek were once teammates at the Marshall University in the early 2000’s.
Finally, after a cancellation of their week 4 game, the Lynn Camp Wildcats will travel this Friday night to Jackson County.
