In 2013, the Whitley County Lady Colonels volleyball program secured its first-ever 13th Region championship title. It was a milestone moment, setting the tone for future teams in terms of overall expectations. A year later, four senior players – Kelsey Osborne, Taylor Dingess, Chelsea Bozeman and Becky Miller - led the way for what Whitley volleyball hoped would be a successful defense of their 13th Region crown. The Corbin Lady Redhounds Volleyball Team’s season came to an end Monday night with a five-set loss to Montgomery County in the first round of the state tournament. Playing in front of a sizeable crowd at Gilliam Gym, including a huge section of fellow students and athletes decked out in red, the Lady Redhounds took the first set from 10th Region Champion Lady Indians, 25-19. Corbin Volleyball’s road through the state tournament became clearer Thursday night, and the first step will happen Monday night at Gilliam Gym against 10th Region Champion Montgomery County. The Lady Indians defeated Campbell County in five sets Thursday night to advance. Montgomery County is 27-11 on the season. Corbin earned the right to host based on a higher RPI rating. The 13th Region Champion Lady Redhounds are 28-5 after defeating Whitley County Tuesday night in the championship match. Their RPI stands at .64426, compared to Montgomery County’s .58827. The Corbin Lady Redhounds are 13th Region Volleyball Champions. Corbin defeated Whitley County in four sets, 25-19, 16-25, 25-12, 25-16. Corbin will host the 10th Region champion in the first round of the state tournament on Monday. The 10th Region championship is scheduled to be played on Thursday.

Corbin and Whitley County each have one more hoop to jump through to reach the 13th Region Volleyball Championship match. They will each have that opportunity tonight at Jackson County. Whitley County will face Bell County in one semi-final match, while Corbin will take on North Laurel in the second semi-final. The 13th Region Volleyball Tournament will open Saturday at Jackson County High School. Defending region champion Corbin, who is coming in, once again, as the 50th District Champion, will face Harlan County in the opening round at 9 p.m. Whitley County, which will be on the other side of the eight-team bracket, will face 49th District Champion and host Jackson County in the opening round at 3 p.m. The winner of Corbin/Harlan County will face the winner of the Knox Central/North Laurel match in the semi-finals on Monday night. Corbin and Whitley County have each earned a spot in the 13th Region Volleyball Tournament, but the Lady Redhounds are going as the 50th District Champions after defeating the Lady Colonels Tuesday night. Corbin won at Whitley County in three sets by scores of 25-18, 5-21 and 25-19. The Lady Redhounds defeated Williamsburg, while Whitley County took down South Laurel in the first round Monday night to earn the right to advance to region and a spot in Tuesday’s championship. The Williamsburg Lady Jackets Volleyball team recently participated in the All A State Tournament after winning the 13th Region All A Tournament. The Lady Jackets defeated Pineville, Jackson County and Lynn Camp in the region tournament to advance to the state tournament last Friday and Saturday at Eastern Kentucky University.  Williamsburg lost to Wolfe County and Bethlehem on Friday and Bishop Brossart on Saturday. The Corbin Lady Redhounds Volleyball Team is on a mission to exceed its 2020 performance that ended with a 13th Region title and a trip to the state volleyball tournament. Whitley County High School announced Tuesday that David Halcomb is returning to lead the girls’ volleyball program. Halcomb, who previously coached the program from 2007 until 2017, led the Lady Colonels to eight district titles and two region championships. In that same period, Whitley County Volleyball had eight winning seasons. In April 2018, Halcomb resigned to take over as coach of the girls’ basketball team. “I am excited about the opportunity to get back into coaching volleyball at Whitley County High School,” Halcomb said. “I take great pride in our volleyball program and the tradition of success it has had over the years.” Halcomb will be taking over for Neysa Countryman who led the...
