Competency to be determined for Williamsburg man accused of shooting estranged wife in July 2023

A ruling is expected in the coming weeks as to whether a Williamsburg man accused of attempting to kill his estranged wife in 2023 is competent to stand trial.  Steward Peace, 44, faces a lone count of attempted murder in connection to a July 2023 incident in which he allegedly shot his estranged wife, Misty Peace, in a wooded area off Fifth Street Road in Corbin. Peace appeared in Whitley Circuit Court on Tuesday for a competency hearing, which was held privately behind closed doors due to the confidential medical information that was discussed during the hearing. Living memorial: Local woman vows to not let WWII veteran relative be forgotten

Milly Burkhart, Corbin, is a Harlan native with an important story to tell about an uncle who died 12 years before she was even born. Corporal Hiram Cawood Carter was just 19-years-old when he was killed while serving in Italy in October of 1944. A newspaper clipping that was passed down to Burkhart by her mother, Ruth, said that Carter was serving with the U.S. Army’s Company K, 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Division. Downtown Corbin’s newest event venue, The Honeymill, holds its grand opening ribbon cutting

The HoneyMill Event Venue, which is located at 100 N. Kentucky Avenue in Corbin, held a ribbon cutting last Friday celebrating its grand opening. The venue can be set up with tables and chairs for up to 30 guests at a price of $70 for three-hour period. Owners Whitney Honeycutt and Shannon Mills cut the ribbon. They also received their Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce membership plaque.

Knox Co. Grand Jury indicts Corbin man on eight counts of first-degree sexual abuse

The Knox County Grand Jury handed down first-degree sexual abuse indictments in a pair of separate cases Friday. The grand jury indicted Joshua William Cawood, 36, of Corbin, charging him with eight counts of first-degree sexual abuse, which involved four different victims. The victims were allegedly abused at different times over a time period ranging from Jan. 1, 2020, through June 22, 2024, according to the indictment. The first victim, who had a year of birth of 2007, was allegedly subjected to sexual contact between Jan. 1, 2020, and Sept. 14, 2021, and again from Sept. 15, 2021, through Dec. 31, 2023.
