She was born May 1, 1941 in Emlyn, KY to the late John Earl and Hannah Owens Adams. Kathy Walczak, representing the Tri-County Elks Club, recently presented a donation to sponsor the Operation UNITE Shoot Hoops Not Drugs Summer Program. There are seven Shoot Hoops clinics in eastern Kentucky. Former University of Kentucky point guard and four-time All-SEC Academic Team member Jarrod Polson conducts the camps. The closest one will be on Tuesday (June 17) at Whitley County High School. All of the camps will begin at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. All attendees will receive a free meal, a free basketball, a free t-shirt and a chance to win a basketball goal. The inaugural Refuge Ridge 5K drew about 90 human participants in addition to a few canines Saturday morning in Williamsburg. Refuge Ridge is a wolf dog rescue facility located in Whitley County. Johanan Woodring won the race with a time of 19:25. Alicia McClary was the top female finisher with a time of 22:50.

A ruling is expected in the coming weeks as to whether a Williamsburg man accused of attempting to kill his estranged wife in 2023 is competent to stand trial.  Steward Peace, 44, faces a lone count of attempted murder in connection to a July 2023 incident in which he allegedly shot his estranged wife, Misty Peace, in a wooded area off Fifth Street Road in Corbin. Peace appeared in Whitley Circuit Court on Tuesday for a competency hearing, which was held privately behind closed doors due to the confidential medical information that was discussed during the hearing. Milly Burkhart, Corbin, is a Harlan native with an important story to tell about an uncle who died 12 years before she was even born. Corporal Hiram Cawood Carter was just 19-years-old when he was killed while serving in Italy in October of 1944. A newspaper clipping that was passed down to Burkhart by her mother, Ruth, said that Carter was serving with the U.S. Army’s Company K, 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Division. The clipping also noted that he was a senior at the old Hall High School in Harlan at the time of his enlistment. This time of year is crazy busy when it comes to athletic competitions. Whether it be at the local, regional, or state level, there is no shortage of options if you’re a sports fan. The HoneyMill Event Venue, which is located at 100 N. Kentucky Avenue in Corbin, held a ribbon cutting last Friday celebrating its grand opening. The venue can be set up with tables and chairs for up to 30 guests at a price of $70 for three-hour period. Owners Whitney Honeycutt and Shannon Mills cut the ribbon. They also received their Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce membership plaque.
