WCHS girls soccer team ends season as region runner-up

With a 6-2 loss to the North Laurel Lady Jaguars in the championship game of this year's 13th Region tournament, the Whitley County Lady Colonels concluded their 2024 season with an overall record of 9 wins and 8 losses. The Lady Jags scored the first two goals of Thursday evening's regional championship contest, played at the Whitley County High School soccer complex. With 17:20 remaining in the first half, senior Autumn Sawyers scored on a penalty kick for the Colonels, but North scored again about five minutes later to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. CMS golfer competing for state title this week

Makena Myatt is no stranger when it comes to golfing in high-pressure situations. She managed to turn heads last year, as a seventh grader, by competing at the state level and this year has been more of the same. Earlier this fall, Myatt won the Kentucky 2A regional at Wasioto Winds in Pineville, and she and her teammates – Kalyn Watkins, Hannah Perry, Addison Bonham and Mackenzie Hutton – qualified to play in the 2A state championship meet in Owensboro. Just a few weeks ago, Myatt played well enough in the “big” regional meet at London Country Club to advance to this year’s Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championships....

Friday Night Highlights: Oct. 11, 2024

It was a night of district competition Friday in Corbin and Williamsburg. The Corbin Redhounds hosted their first district game of the season when they welcomed in the Letcher County Central Cougars for this year's Grace Health Bowl. The Hounds were dominant, shutting out the Cougars, 35-0, to improve to 6-1 on the season. Next week, they will make the short trip south on I-75 to face the Whitley County Colonels. Speaking of the Colonels, they also managed to secure a district victory Friday, pulling out a 17-14 win over the visiting Perry County Central Commodores. It was a night of major victories for coverage area high school football teams. In their first game since Sept. 13, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets traveled to Pineville Friday to open up district play against the winless Mountain Lions. The Jackets made sure that their opponents remained without a win, dominating with a 48-0 shutout victory. Williamsburg, now 3-1 on the year, will travel again next Friday, Oct. 11, to face the Lynn Camp Wildcats (3-2), who were on bye this week. Regroup: After week 4 disruptions, football teams getting back on track

Due to a manhunt for a potentially dangerous gunman in the local area, week four of the 2024 high school football season ended up looking a lot different than it was originally scheduled to. As a precautionary measure, some games were called off completely while others were moved to different locations. In the Whitley County Colonels’ case, they ended up playing a different opponent entirely. Originally scheduled to make the short trip to London to play at South Laurel, the Colonels ended up going on the road to Campbellsville where they were shutout, 35-0, by the undefeated Eagles. WHS volleyball team gearing up for All ‘A’ state tournament this week

For the fourth consecutive year, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets volleyball team will be representing the 13th Region in the All “A” Classic State Championship Tournament. The Lady Jackets, who came into this week with an overall record of 13 wins and three losses, defeated Jackson County, Pineville and Barbourville earlier this month to secure their latest regional All “A” crown. In the upcoming 2024 All “A” state tourney, Williamsburg will face a trio of capable opponents in pool play before hopefully making a run at a state title if they are able to make it into the championship bracket. The Corbin Redhounds, Whitley County Colonels and Williamsburg Yellow Jackets were all in action in front of home crowds in week 3. At Williamsburg, the Jackets were eager to play the first game on their newly installed turf field. Unfortunately, the Clay County Tigers came to town and spoiled the party, managing to walk away with a 27-18 victory. WCHS Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024 announced

Whitley County Schools has announced the 2024 inductees into their Athletic Hall of Fame. They are… Abbey Estes-Logan If grit and determination are the Whitley County athletic brand, then Abbey Estes Logan is the player example. After tearing her ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus before her freshman year, she returned her sophomore year to put together one of the best careers in Lady Colonel history. As a sophomore, Abbey averaged 12 points and 4 assists a game. Her junior season, she set the single season assist record of 168, while dishing out a single game record of 14 assists in a district win over South Laurel. Her senior season was one...

Friday Night Highlights: Aug. 30, 2024

The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets and the Whitley County Colonels were both in action in London Friday night. The Jackets met up with Bourbon County in game one of a two-game bowl at South Laurel High School. This was Williamsburg's season opener, and they were successful, winning, 38-20. Next week, they will host the Clay County Tigers in the Annual Alumni Bowl. This particular Alumni Bowl will be extra special, because it will be the first game held at the newly remodeled stadium at WHS. It was a good night for coverage area high school football teams, as those who were in action were able to kick off the 2024 season with statement-making victories. In Corbin, the Head Coach Luke Salmons era got started with a bang as the Redhounds managed to knock off a defending state champion in game two of this year's Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic.
