An apparent act of vandalism at Vanbeber Court in Corbin has resulted in repair work that will cost an estimated $15,000, and a cash reward is now being offered for information that leads to a conviction of the person, or persons, responsible.
“This does nothing but hurt the residents,” Corbin Housing Authority Executive Director Robert Hayes said of the incident. “Our funds are limited right now, and to have an intentional act of vandalism like this is disgraceful.”
According to Hayes, someone broke up several bricks and stuffed them into a cleanout pipe that is located behind one of the housing units at Vanbeber Court. This resulted in a plumbing system failure, which ended up affecting nearly 20 individual apartments.
Because of the exact nature of the incident, Hayes believes that the culprit knew what they were doing. He said that he has a suspect in mind, but that he cannot prove anything at this time.
While service has since been restored to the affected apartments, Tim Canada with Plumb-Tec, LLC said that there are some concerns about potential longterm damage that may not be known until a later date. He said the plumbing lines that had to be replaced as a result of this incident were less than a year old.
Hayes is offering a $500 reward for anyone who can come forward with information that will lead to an arrest and a conviction. Those with information can contact the Corbin Housing Authority at (606) 528-5104.
